EmFace Treatment | NeuGlow Singapore
How it works, medical assessment, current evidence, possible risks and treatment expectations.
A doctor-assessed treatment option for selected concerns relating to facial wrinkles and mild to moderate facial laxity.
Facial ageing can involve the skin, soft tissue, muscle, volume and structural support. EmFace is one possible treatment tool within a personalised plan and is not automatically appropriate for every patient.
What is EmFace?
EmFace combines high-intensity facial electrical stimulation (HIFES) of selected muscles with radiofrequency (RF) energy delivered to the treatment area.
HIFES produces repeated contractions in selected muscles, while RF provides controlled heating to the treatment area.
A doctor will assess whether the device, applicator and proposed treatment area are appropriate for the individual.
How EmFace May Fit into a Treatment Plan
At NeuGlow, treatment planning begins with the patient’s concern rather than with a particular device.
A doctor assesses the patient’s medical history, facial anatomy, skin condition, soft-tissue support, volume distribution, previous treatments and expectations. Depending on the findings, EmFace may be considered on its own or as one part of a staged treatment plan.
Another treatment—or no treatment—may be recommended if EmFace is unlikely to address the patient’s main concern.
What Does the Current Evidence Suggest?
The strongest clinical evidence for EmFace relates to temporary facial-wrinkle reduction and selected patients with mild to moderate facial laxity.
Published human studies have reported changes in wrinkle scores and measures of facial laxity or tissue position following treatment. However, most studies have been small and uncontrolled, several were manufacturer-funded, and follow-up has generally been limited to several months.
The available evidence supports the possibility of modest, gradual and temporary change in appropriately selected patients. It does not establish that EmFace reproduces a facelift, reliably restores lost volume or produces a predictable lifting or contouring result.
US FDA-Cleared Uses
The following clearances apply to specified BTL device and applicator configurations:
- The relevant forehead and cheek electrodes are US FDA-cleared for non-invasive temporary reduction of facial wrinkles.
- The BTL-785BNF Handpiece is US FDA-cleared for aesthetic use including facial and neck stimulation.
- The BTL-785S with the dedicated BTL-785-7-9 submental applicator is US FDA-cleared to affect the appearance of lax tissue in the submental area.
These are US FDA-cleared uses. They must not be described as FDA-approved or as Singapore HSA-registered indications.
A doctor will assess which device configuration, applicator and treatment area may be appropriate. Suitability, response and outcomes vary between individuals.
What Happens During Treatment?
Applicators are positioned over the selected treatment areas. During treatment, the patient may experience heating and repeated muscle contractions.
Treatment Planning
The number and interval of treatments are determined following medical assessment. Treatment should not be marketed as a fixed package that everyone requires.
Treatment response and the duration of any change vary. No particular outcome can be guaranteed.
Review After Treatment
Treatment is followed by a scheduled review where appropriate. Progress may be assessed using standardised photography, the patient’s documented concern and relevant clinical observations.
The review may result in no further treatment, additional treatment where appropriate or an individual maintenance plan. Maintenance should not be presented as automatically necessary.
Who May Not Be Suitable?
EmFace is not suitable for everyone. Medical screening is required for active electronic implants such as pacemakers or defibrillators; relevant metal or permanent implants; pregnancy, breastfeeding or IVF treatment; active infection, inflammation or unhealed wounds; anticoagulant use or bleeding disorders; relevant medical or skin conditions; and recent procedures.
This is not a complete list. A doctor will review the patient’s medical history, medications, implanted devices, previous procedures and proposed treatment area. Additional precautions may apply to particular applicators and treatment areas.
Potential Risks
Possible effects include temporary redness, swelling, warmth, dry skin, muscle soreness or muscle spasms. Skin crusting, blistering or burns can occur.
The nature and duration of possible effects vary between individuals. The doctor will discuss the risks relevant to the proposed treatment.
What Happens During Treatment?
A treatment session typically lasts around 20 minutes.
Applicators are positioned on selected areas of the face. During treatment, you may experience:
- Gentle warmth from the radiofrequency energy
- Repetitive muscle contractions produced by HIFES™
Most individuals can resume their usual daily activities after the session, although individual experiences may vary.
The number of treatments recommended depends on your clinical assessment and desired treatment plan.
Medical Consultation
A medical consultation is required to assess suitability and discuss the expected benefits, limitations, possible risks, alternatives and recovery.
