HEALTHWAY Medical has roped in International Finance Corporation as a shareholder, with an agreement to place out shares for the equivalent of US$10 million to fund its China expansion plans.
The investment by IFC is part of a US$25 million financing package, of which US$15 million is in the form of a senior loan, Healthway said yesterday.
It was International Enterprise Singapore, the agency that promotes the overseas growth of Singapore-based enterprises, that introduced IFC to Healthway Medical. IFC is a member of the World Bank Group.
The mainboard-listed company will issue 108 million new shares to IFC at 13 cents apiece, which represents a 10 per cent discount from the simple average of two figures – the closing share price on Jan 7, adjusted for rights issue, and the average closing share prices for the period July 1-Dec 31, 2009. In the stock market yesterday, Healthway closed at 18 cents.
Healthway managing director Wong Weng Hong told BT that the company had decided in 2006 that China was going to be a main engine of growth.
‘In fact, we had anticipated changes to healthcare policies and demand patterns as the income levels in the first-tier and second-tier cities advanced. Over the past three and a half years, we have learnt how to operate in the Chinese market effectively. But more importantly, we have built up a local team that will build and grow with the company.’
Healthway will initially develop and manage a network of primary and ambulatory facilities in Shanghai. It will subsequently be expanded to outer Shanghai, neighbouring provinces and then to other regions of China.
Dr Wong added: ‘There are several successful local private operators in the Chinese market, but in general, they do not scale their operations, except in health screening. The foreign companies have been more aggressive in setting up networks of medical clinics to serve mostly expatriate patients, for example, Worldlink and United Family Clinics, and they have been very successful.
‘Healthway Medical has identified an opportunity to position a strong and trusted Singapore brand to provide high quality and affordable primary medical services to the middle-income locals. Many of them have moved out of the city centre where the main Shanghainese hospitals are situated.’
Karin Finkelston, IFC director of East Asia, said that the partnership would not only provide health services to more patients in China but also create employment opportunities for medical professionals.
‘We expect that Healthway will treat over 300,000 patients each year and create over 500 skilled jobs over the next few years.’

HEALTHWAY Medical will open a specialist centre at TripleOne Somerset.
The project, which is estimated to cost $40 million, will be completed in several stages over three years. The first phase, costing $2 million, will be ready later this month.
The entire Healthway Medical Centre (HMC) will occupy seven floors, or about 150,000 sq ft, of TripleOne Somerset.
Plastic surgeons, dentists and dermatologists will be housed in the first phase of the centre, located on level two of TripleOne.
The focus on aesthetics and plastic surgical procedures is aimed at anchoring Healthway’s position as a leading provider of medical aesthetics.
In later stages, other specialist services will be introduced at HMC. To provide the best services, Healthway will join forces with local and overseas institutions to bring in other practices and therapies. The number of doctors in the centre is expected to exceed 200.
HMC managing director Wong Weng Hong said: ‘Many patients in Singapore and around the region are looking for good medical care extended by a reputable and reliable group. We believe this project will address this growing demand.’
The management believes patients and physicians can be linked for consultation and treatment via tele-medical connections with Healthway’s centres in China and other countries in the region.
Dr Wong said: ‘Our centres in Singapore and China will be linked to HMC through leading-edge tele-medicine technology that will enable doctors and patients to connect effectively across vast distances.’
As most of the costs will cover renovation and equipment, funding if any will be predominantly from asset-based lending from banks – such as hire-purchase and term loans, a source said.
The establishment of HMC is not expected to have any material effect on the net tangible assets and earnings per share of Healthway for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2010.
Yesterday, Healthway shares closed one cent lower at 17 cents.

Healthway Medical Corporation says there is an increasing demand for medically proven solutions to improve one’s appearance and well- being through treatments focusing on the skin, hair, teeth and weight management. In addition, the aesthetic dental division will focus on teeth whitening via the latest laser technology. Simple checkups for cavities can also be detected and treated on the spot with the fillings.

As hair loss is increasingly common among many working adults, the NeuGLOW Medical Hair Clinic at Mandarin Gallery will offer pioneering hair restoration solutions, including the Omnigraft hair transplantation technology to permanently replace lost hair in patients with balding problems.

The group intends to finance the opening of the four new NeuGLOW centres from internal resources and new bank borrowings.

The opening of the four new NeuGLOW centres is not expected to have any material effect on the net tangible assets and earnings per share of the Healthway Medical Corporation for the financial year ending 31 December 2009

“Laser” is an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of light.
The machines are usually named based on the type of lasing medium they contain. Hence, we have the CO2, Nd:YAG, diode lasers etc.
Each laser emits energy in one particular wavelength that’s specific to the laser type. Because different targets in the skin will absorb different wavelengths, this property allows selectivity in the application of the various lasers. Obviously, some lasers function more effectively on certain conditions than others; equally obvious is that no one type of laser can treat all lesions and blemishes optimally on its own.

Here, we discuss the more common conditions of the face and the various lasers used to treat them:

Pigmentary lesions such as freckles, seborrhoeic keratosis, melasma are frequently treated with Q-switched lasers like Q-switched Nd-YAG and Q-switched alexandrite.

Vascular lesions like spider veins and port wine stains are amenable to laser treatment by the long-pulsed Nd-YAG and  pulsed dye laser.

Facial hair removal is effectively done with alexandrite, diode and Nd-YAG lasers.

Post acne scars are visibly improved with laser resurfacing by CO2 or erbium:YAG lasers. Recent introduction of “fractional” CO2 and Erbium has provided patients with the option of resurfacing with much less downtime and side effects.

Skin tightening and lifting can be achieved using lasers at the infrared light range. Long-pulsed lasers at other wavelengths are also effective, especially when combined with radiofrequency devices.

It is clear from the above short discussion that a number of different lasers are required to provide for a more comprehensive solution to the myriad of skin lesions that we frequently encounter.

SINGAPORE : More people are going for aesthetic treatments despite the recession, and what is interesting is that increasing numbers of them are men.

To look their best this festive season, some are pulling out all the stops.

Aesthetic service providers said business has increased some 30 per cent despite the recession.

Many go for botox and laser treatments to reduce ageing signs, while others opt to go under the knife to sharpen their image.

But if you think these only involve women, think again. Men now make up 15 per cent of clients.

Dr Gerard Tan, medical director, Neuglow, said: “Men also realise the importance of actually looking good. A lot of all these procedures are non-invasive and do not need much time.

“All they have to do is to come in for a simple procedure, may it be a botox injection or filling up a void in their face – just basically simple procedures. This has made them want to come in, more actually.”

Observers said people are more willing to invest in aesthetic treatments to get an edge in the job market – especially during an economic downturn.

Some have even gone to the point of getting non-scientifically proven treatments. These include cellular therapy and placenta injections which are supposed to regenerate youthful looks.

Currently, doctors need to seek approval from the Singapore Medical Council’s Aesthetic Practice Oversight Committee before offering such procedures. This is because they are not considered well-established practices in the aesthetic treatment field. – CNA/ms

Botox treatment is presently the most popular non invasive treatment in the world today. Botox is a brand name for a protein that relaxes certain part of specific muscles that causes wrinkles of facial expression.
It does this by  blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle will relax , which in turn causes the wrinkles to relax and soften.
As a result, the face will have a more relaxed, lifted look and the skin texture will be smoother.

How Does Botox Work?

Small, diluted amounts is injected through a very tiny needle directly into specific muscles causing controlled relaxation of the muscles.
In April 2002, Botox gained FDA approval for treatment of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles.
It is most often used on forehead lines, crow’s feet  (lines around the eye) and frown lines

How Is the Procedure Performed?

The procedure takes only a few minutes. Botox is injected with a very fine needle just under the skin into specific muscles with only minor discomfort.
In NeuGlow we will try our best to make our patients as comfortable by minimizing the discomfort during the procedure. It generally takes three to seven days to take effect. Best results are seen after 2 weeks. The effects from Botox will last three to six months. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to re-appear gradually and wrinkles need to be re-treated. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because the muscles are being trained to relax.

What Are the Side Effects of Botox?

Temporary bruising is the most common side effect. Headaches, which resolve in 24-48 hours can occur, but this is rare. A small percentage of patients may develop a mild eyelid drooping by migration of the Botox and for this reason, you shouldn’t rub the treated area for 12 hours after injection This usually resolves in three weeks. There have been no allergies associated with Botox to date.

Who Should Not Receive Botox Injection?

Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a nervous system  disease should not use Botox. Since Botox doesn’t work for all wrinkles, a consultation with a doctor is recommended.
